Poetry has both a written and an oral tradition, and by tradition, libraries are places where the oral tradition--the spoken work--is exercised. The library’s Poetry in the Woods series began eleven years ago when poet, college teacher, and environmental activist Barry Zucker approached the library and offered his services to create a series of poetry readings.
The series was called Poetry in the Woods, as poetry readings were offered initially at the Bertram Woods Branch Library. Summer poetry programs at Horseshoe Lake Park were dubbed Poetry Really in the Woods, and when Woods Branch was renovated in 2002, the poetry series moved to Main Library and was renamed Poetry Not in the Woods. For the past two years, Friends of the Shaker Library has generously funded the series that has returned to Woods Branch and is now called Poetry Back in the Woods.
Through his creative energy, his vision, and his dedication to poetry and the spoken word, Barry Zucker has created an atmosphere where poets can share their insights with others. The tradition continues. Monthly poetry readings are listed on the library’s adult programs page.
