Message to the community from Luren E. Dickinson:
It’s time to Dig into Reading at Shaker Library. That’s the theme of this summer’s Reading Program with activities for everyone who wants burrow into books! Registration begins June 10 online or in person. Even if you don’t join the reading program, please visit us often this summer for your educational, informational, and recreational needs.
The traditional summer reading program for children continues through July 31. We even have a special reading program and activities for preschoolers who are not yet reading on their own. The reading programs encourage children to keep track of the time they spend reading (or listening) to books and add up the hours to earn prizes. Even if you are traveling out of town or attending camp, you can still participate and report online.
Teens, ages 13 through 18, have their own special “Beneath the Surface” summer reading program, which runs concurrently with the children’s reading program. Teens can register in person or online and enter to win weekly prize drawings for $10 gift cards for Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, or GameStop. After reading five hours, they qualify to choose a free book at the Main Library’s Teen Center. For every 25 hours read, they earn a ticket for the Grand Prize Drawing of a Kindle Fire HD!
Adults can model good reading habits with their own “Groundbreaking Reads” summer reading program. Be sure to stop in and pick up a seed-infused bookmark detailing the program. The names of all adult participants will be entered into a Grand Prize drawing for a Kindle eReader.
We extend great THANKS to the Friends of the Shaker Library, our friendly volunteer organization that underwrites all of these wonderful summer programs and events. Their funds pay for all of the craft materials, prizes, food, special entertainers and the end-of -the-summer-reading party. We could not do what we do without their generosity!
Want to learn more about the Friends? Join them at their Annual Meeting at 7 PM Thursday, July 11 at Woods Branch. Weather permitting, they will meet in the garden and welcome you with cool refreshments.
We are ready to help you Dig into Reading and uncover some great reading suggestions.
