National Poetry Month and National Library Week occur in April and we hope you will celebrate with us. We are proud to host Poetry in the Woods, Northeast Ohio’s longest running poetry series in a library. Our April 11 program will be held at 7 pm at Bertram Woods Branch and will feature poets P. K. Saha, Shawn Zevit, and Barry Zucker.
P.K. Saha is a Shaker resident and retired professor of English and Linguistics at Case whose poetry has been published in Australia, England, India and the U.S. Rabbi Shawn Israel Zevit, who lives in Cleveland, is a spiritual director, clergy trainer, writer and poet. Barry Zucker, a fixture of the poetry series from the beginning, is well known for reading his poetry throughout the Greater Cleveland area and supporting other poets.
In addition, to National Poetry Month it is also National Jazz Appreciation Month and we will celebrate both at a birthday observance of the late, great Cuyahoga County poet laureate Daniel Thompson with the music of Drumplay, saxophonist Ernie Krivda, and poet Ray McNiece from 2-4 pm Sunday, April 21 at Main Library. A public poet and political activist since the sixties, Daniel Thompson was the founder of Poetsbank, and organizer of such cultural events in the Cleveland area as Junkstock.
The theme for this year’s National Library Week, which we celebrate April 14-20, is Communities Matter@YourLibrary. This year’s Honorary Chairperson is Caroline Kennedy, an advocate for reading, literacy and libraries. The daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy has written or edited 10 bestselling books on American history, politics and poetry.
During National Library Week and throughout April, libraries host special events to highlight the unique role they play in people’s lives. Shaker Library can help you, and your family, discover a new and exciting world through a variety of collections, digital resources and more. Whether you need help with homework, a job search, health issues, language skills, or just want a good book—hard copy or electronic—Shaker Library is the place for you!
Shaker Library has long enjoyed the support of its Friends of the Shaker Library which sponsors its Spring Book Sale this April 18-21 at Main Library.
