The Memory Care Collection is a special set of items intended for residents experiencing memory loss to borrow and use with their loved ones.

What's in the Collection

The items in Shaker Library's Memory Care Collection are books, DVDs, puzzles, games, and manipulatives. They're intended to create opportunities for people experiencing memory loss to stay engaged, keep their hands and minds busy, and get them talking and remembering.

The board games in the collection ask users to tell stories or select images that remind them of people, places, and experiences they had in life. The board games are non-competitive, simple to play, and come with large, colorful pieces designed for people with dexterity issues.
The manipulatives in the collection are fidget toys that bring comfort or help users practice coordination.
All the items in the collection are absent of childlike features, designed to maintain the dignity of the adults using them.

Shaker Library wants families to know there are things you can do to make a difference in your loved one’s journey, and we can help support you in that.

Where are the items from?

The items were purchased from the Alzheimer’s Association store or other reputable vendors that make items that help people living with dementia stay active.

Where is the collection housed?

At Main Library, though customers can call to request items be sent to the Bertram Woods Branch for pick up.

How long can I keep the items?

The items circulate for two weeks to give families a sense of whether this item is a fit for their loved one. Maybe the item will be helpful now. Maybe it will be helpful later. But we want people to know these items are here, and you don’t have to make a large investment to try them out.
